Course Overview

This online short-term course, "Biostatistics for Beginners," offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of biostatistics. The course is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in statistics, providing a solid foundation for understanding and applying biostatistical methods in biological research.

The course will cover a range of essential topics, from data types and descriptive statistics to probability distributions and hypothesis testing. Participants will gain practical skills in summarizing data, interpreting results, and drawing meaningful inferences from biological datasets.

Dr. Samay Pande from the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, IISc Bangalore, will be the course coordinator. He will guide participants through the core concepts and practical applications of biostatistics.

Schedule and Format

The course will run from April 21st to April 25th, 2025. Each session will be held online from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM (India Standard Time). This format allows participants to attend from anywhere with an internet connection.

The online format allows for interactive learning and Q&A sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the instructor and fellow learners, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

The course consists of five sessions, each focusing on a specific area of biostatistics. These sessions build upon each other, providing a progressive learning experience.

Course Content

Session 1 introduces the genesis of biodata, covering the role of biostatistics and data types. Session 2 focuses on descriptive statistics, teaching participants how to summarize and articulate data effectively.

Session 3 delves into probability and distributions, familiarizing participants with common statistical distributions. Session 4 unlocks the secrets of hypothesis testing and inferential statistics.

The final session, Session 5, unveils connections through correlation and regression analysis. It also focuses on the interpretation of results with precision and clarity.
