Overview

This is a three-day online training program focused on the promotion of biofortified crops for nutrition security. The training will take place from July 16th to 18th, 2025. The mode of delivery is online, utilizing the ECHO platform supported by Zoom.

The program aims to address malnutrition, particularly hidden hunger caused by micronutrient deficiencies prevalent in the Indian population. It emphasizes that despite increased food production, the nutritional quality of food remains a significant concern.

Biofortification, a scientifically proven strategy, will be highlighted as a means to enhance the nutritional profile of staple crops through breeding and agronomic practices. The training seeks to disseminate knowledge and best practices for the widespread adoption of biofortified varieties.

Objectives

The primary objective is to create awareness about the crucial role of biofortified crops in combating micronutrient deficiencies. This involves educating participants on the benefits and impact of these crops on public health.

Another key objective is to build capacity among stakeholders for the effective promotion and dissemination of biofortified varieties. This includes training on cultivation techniques, marketing strategies, and policy advocacy.

The training will showcase successful models and policy frameworks that support biofortification initiatives. Participants will learn from real-world examples and gain insights into effective strategies for implementation and scaling up.

Finally, the program aims to encourage the integration of biofortified crops into existing agriculture and nutrition programs. This will help ensure that these crops reach the populations that need them most.

Key Topics

The training will cover biofortification techniques and breeding strategies, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of how these crops are developed. This includes insights into genetic improvement and agronomic practices.

Success stories from the field will be shared, offering practical examples of how biofortified crops have made a positive impact on communities. These stories will highlight the benefits and potential of these crops in addressing malnutrition.

Global and national experiences in biofortified crop development will be explored, providing a broader perspective on the challenges and opportunities in this field. Participants will learn from the successes and failures of different initiatives around the world.

The program will also focus on linking agriculture and nutrition strategies for community impact. This includes exploring how biofortified crops can be integrated into nutrition programs to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
