The EHA Research Grants program supports the future of hematology by providing funding to talented junior researchers. These grants aim to facilitate basic or translational lab-based research, foster research and leadership skills, and propel researchers towards becoming group leaders, ultimately advancing their careers in the field.

Grant Types and Funding

EHA offers three distinct research grant types to cater to various career stages and research focuses. The EHA Junior Research Grant provides €50,000 per year for three years. This grant is designed for researchers early in their careers.

The EHA Advanced Research Grant and EHA Physician Scientist Research Grant both offer €80,000 per year for three years. These grants support more established researchers and physician-scientists engaged in hematological research.

A special Topic-In-Focus Research Grant is available for research concentrating on hemoglobinopathies or precision hematology. This grant underscores EHA's commitment to specific areas within hematology.

General Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for an EHA Research Grant, several general criteria must be met. Firstly, the applicant must be an EHA member. Secondly, the applicant's institute must be an academic research center or equivalent located in Europe.

Applicants must have the support of an academic department and institute. Furthermore, the research application must pertain to basic and translational lab-based research in hematology. Applications focusing on purely clinical research, health economics, or other non-lab-based research are not eligible.

However, projects related to the translational part of a clinical trial may be considered if they are both relevant and novel. Each grant type has its own specific eligibility criteria that applicants must review before applying.

  • Must be an EHA member

  • Affiliated with an academic research center in Europe

  • Have support from an academic department

Topic-In-Focus and Special Considerations

The Topic-In-Focus Research Grant is specifically designed for researchers working on hemoglobinopathies or precision hematology. This targeted funding aims to advance knowledge and innovation in these critical areas of hematology.

EHA has earmarked up to two grants across all categories for researchers based in specific countries. This initiative aims to ensure broader community benefits and support researchers in underserved regions.

A full list of eligible countries can be found on the EHA website, detailing the initiative to extend the reach of EHA Research Grants. This ensures a more equitable distribution of research funding.

Key Dates and Application Process

The next call for applications will open on June 9, 2025, at 15:00 (CEST). Interested applicants should prepare their applications well in advance to meet the deadline.

The application process involves submitting a detailed research proposal, supporting documents, and meeting all eligibility criteria. Applicants should carefully review the guidelines and requirements outlined on the EHA website.

Ensure all necessary information is included to facilitate a thorough review of the application. Successful applicants will be notified after the review and selection process.
