Description

The Enhancing Understanding of and Preparedness for Public Health Threats Through Research in Kenya opportunity, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the CDC's Office of Grants Services and referred to as CDC-ERA, supports research, implementation science, and public health evaluations. The programme aims to inform best practices for preventing and responding to infectious disease threats in Kenya while simultaneously strengthening local research capacity.

Overview

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is designed to generate evidence that will guide U.S. and global preparedness efforts, reduce the disease burden and health threats in Kenya, and prevent the spread of health threats across borders. The award recipient will conduct activities through the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and focus on four required priority areas: influenza and other respiratory pathogens, vaccine-preventable diseases, drug-resistant infections, and global and emerging health threats. The recipient will also manage and oversee U.S. government–funded public health research, ensuring compliance with financial and ethical standards and enhancing organizational infrastructure.

Research Areas and Activities

  • Influenza and other respiratory pathogens: Activities include surveillance of high-risk groups, monitoring for human and avian influenza and other pathogens, and evaluating the efficacy and use of vaccines and other treatments. Expected outcomes include an increased understanding of disease burden and improved vaccination strategies.
  • Vaccine-preventable diseases: Research will assess disease burden, vaccine effectiveness, and sociocultural factors influencing immunization. Expected outcomes include increased vaccine uptake and strengthened immunization systems.
  • Drug-resistant infections: Activities include monitoring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) trends, applying novel diagnostics, and identifying drivers of resistance. Expected outcomes include improved mitigation strategies and global AMR preparedness.
  • Global and emerging health threats: Research will address malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, and emerging infections. Expected outcomes include an improved understanding of disease dynamics, intervention effectiveness, and cross-border risks.
