This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications for R61/R33 grants to investigate the impact of stressors on the biological mechanisms of aging. The research should focus on stress exposures during adulthood, examining how these stressors affect the hallmarks of aging, lifespan, healthspan, and resilience. The NOFO encourages the use of experimental model systems, including in vitro systems, laboratory animals, and well-characterized animal populations.
The research should be divided into two phases: an exploratory phase (R61) and a developmental phase (R33). The R61 phase aims to identify stressors that impact the hallmarks of aging during adulthood. The R33 phase will then expand upon the findings from the R61 phase to investigate the effects of stressors on lifespan, healthspan, and resilience.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local and state governments, federal agencies, and foreign organizations. Applicants must complete and maintain registrations in the System for Award Management (SAM), eRA Commons, and Grants.gov.
The maximum budget for the R61 phase is $500,000 over two years, with a maximum of $250,000 per year. The maximum budget for the R33 phase is $1,500,000 over three years, with a maximum of $500,000 per year. The total project period cannot exceed five years.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of intent by the deadline. The NOFO provides detailed instructions for application submission, including specific requirements for the research plan, data management and sharing plan, and human subjects research.
Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov. Applicants must complete all required registrations before the application due date.
Applications will be evaluated for scientific and technical merit by a Scientific Review Group convened by NIA. Applications may undergo a selection process in which only those deemed to have the highest scientific merit will be discussed and assigned an overall impact score.
Recipients will be required to submit an annual Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) and financial statements. A final RPPR, invention statement, and expenditure data portion of the Federal Financial Report are required for closeout of an award.
