Description

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) announces the Limited Competition: Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training Program (P42 Clinical Trial Optional), identified as funding opportunity RFA-ES-27-004. This program supports problem-based, solution-oriented research Centers that consist of multiple, integrated projects representing both biomedical and environmental science and engineering disciplines, along with cores for administration, translational research, engagement, and research support.

Overview

The Superfund Research Program (SRP) Center grants support innovative research and training through multi-project, interdisciplinary grants. Authorized under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), these university-based Centers conduct research to address scientific uncertainties facing the national Superfund program. The goal of each SRP Center is to improve public health by supporting integrative, multidisciplinary research that is problem-based, solution-oriented, and relevant to Superfund priorities. Applicants are expected to design research Centers that integrate biomedical research (e.g., toxicology, epidemiology, mechanistic studies) with environmental science and engineering (e.g., remediation, geosciences, ecological sciences).

Funding and Benefits

  • Estimated Total Funding: $22,000,000
  • Award Ceiling: $1,750,000 per award
  • Award Floor: Not specified
  • Number of Awards: Up to 10
  • Assistance Listing Number: 93.143
  • Funding Instrument: Grant
  • Activity Code: P42 Hazardous Substances Basic Research Grants Program

Eligibility

Per 42 USC 9660(a)(3), eligible applicants are limited to accredited institutes of higher education within the United States. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities, non-domestic components of U.S. organizations, and foreign components are not eligible to apply. Only one application per institution is allowed. Eligible applicants are encouraged to subcontract as appropriate with other organizations to conduct portions of the research, which may include generators of hazardous wastes, persons involved in detection and treatment of hazardous substances, facility owners and operators, and state or local governments. Applications will be peer-reviewed through standard NIH processes, and only meritorious applications will be considered for funding.

Research Areas

SRP Centers support research and training in the following areas, as authorized by SARA Section 311(a):

  • Advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effects of hazardous substances on human health
  • Methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances
  • Methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment
  • Basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances

Centers are expected to assemble interdisciplinary research teams with expertise in both biomedical research and environmental science and engineering to advance scientific knowledge using innovative and integrated approaches.
