The Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training Program (P42 Clinical Trial Optional), issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), supports problem-based, solution-oriented research Centers that integrate biomedical research with environmental science and engineering disciplines. The programme funds multi-project, interdisciplinary grants aimed at improving public health through innovative research on hazardous substances.
This limited competition, identified as RFA-ES-27-004, is a reissue of RFA-ES-23-001 and continues the Superfund Research Program (SRP) Centers. SRP Center grants consist of multiple integrated projects representing both biomedical research (e.g., toxicology, epidemiology, mechanistic studies) and environmental science and engineering (e.g., remediation, geosciences, ecological sciences). Centers also include cores for administration, data management, training, translational research, engagement, and research support. The scope of the SRP Centers derives directly from the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. Only meritorious applications will be considered for funding through NIH standard peer-review processes.
Eligible applicants are limited to accredited institutes of higher education, as specified by 42 USC 9660(a)(3). Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities, non-domestic components of U.S. organizations, and foreign components are not eligible to apply. Eligible institutions are encouraged to subcontract as appropriate with other organizations, such as generators of hazardous wastes, persons involved in the detection and evaluation of hazardous substances, facility owners and operators, and state or local governments. Only one application per institution is allowed.
The programme supports innovative research and training in the following areas:
Applicants must follow the Multi-Project (M) Instructions in the NIH How to Apply - Application Guide, except where program-specific instructions in the NOFO deviate. Applications may be submitted through the NIH ASSIST system or an institutional system-to-system (S2S) solution via Grants.gov and eRA Commons. Applications that do not comply with all instructions may be delayed or not accepted for review. All applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization on the due date. No late applications will be accepted.
