The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has announced a rolling Call for Proposals under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) to support startups in the quantum technology sector. This initiative aims to foster a robust quantum ecosystem in India by strengthening research, infrastructure, talent, and innovation.
The call focuses on four key domains within quantum technology. Startups can apply for support in only one of these domains. The domains are: Quantum Sensing & Metrology, Quantum Communication, Quantum Computing, and Quantum Materials & Devices.
Each domain is supported by a specialized Thematic Hub. These hubs provide strong academic and mentoring support to nurture the selected proposals. The goal is to accelerate technological maturity and innovation in these critical areas.
The Thematic Hubs are located at: IISc Bengaluru (Quantum Computing), IIT Madras (Quantum Communication), IIT Bombay (Quantum Sensing and Metrology), and IIT Delhi (Quantum Materials & Devices).
This call is open to startups that are developing technologies in the specified quantum domains. Startups should demonstrate a clear potential for innovation and impact. They should also have a well-defined plan for achieving technological maturity.
Interested startups should apply to only one of the four Hubs for support, based on their area of focus. Each hub has its own specific application process and criteria. Details can be found on their respective websites.
The call is a rolling call, meaning startups can apply anytime as they reach technological maturity. This allows for continuous intake and evaluation of proposals.
Successful applicants will receive support and mentorship from the Thematic Hubs. This includes access to expertise, infrastructure, and networks. The hubs will provide guidance to help startups navigate the challenges of developing quantum technologies.
The Thematic Hubs are centers of excellence in their respective domains. They offer a collaborative environment for startups to interact with leading researchers and experts. This fosters innovation and accelerates the development of quantum technologies.
The program aims to nurture startups through specialized thematic hubs. These hubs provide strong academic and mentoring support, with focused attention in one domain.
The National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023, is a strategic initiative by the Government of India. It aims to build a robust quantum ecosystem in the country. The mission focuses on strengthening research, infrastructure, talent, and innovation in quantum technologies.
The mission is a significant step towards technological sovereignty and global leadership in quantum technologies. It encourages innovators and entrepreneurs to contribute to this journey. The NQM aims to position India at the forefront of the quantum revolution.
The NQM is being driven by leading institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, C-DOT, and IISc. These institutions are playing a crucial role in fostering innovation and developing quantum technologies.
