The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is encouraging revision applications from currently funded NCI R01 research projects.

The focus of these applications should be on the adaptation and clinical validation of molecular/cellular/imaging markers (biomarkers) for cancer detection, diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and prediction of response in treatment, as well as markers for cancer prevention and control.

The NCI aims to accelerate the translation of NCI-supported methods/assays/technologies to the clinic.

This NOFO is not intended to support early-stage technology development or clinical trials, but rather the adaptation and validation of assays to the point where they could be integrated into clinical trials as investigational assays/tools/devices.

Scope of Work

Applications should propose to clinically validate an existing assay using human specimens in a clinical laboratory into a molecular assay that can be used in a clinical trial for the detection, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, or control of cancer.

Projects that improve standardization or harmonization of assay performance among laboratories are also highly encouraged.

The project should focus on assays that are likely to be used in treatment, prevention, or cancer control trials.

The project should use technologies already in use or soon to be approved for use in clinical laboratories.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include Higher Education Institutions, Nonprofits, For-Profit Organizations, Local Governments, State Governments, Federal Governments, and Foreign Organizations.

Applicant organizations must complete and maintain the following registrations: System for Award Management (SAM), NATO Commercial and Government Entity (NCAGE) Code, Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. All PD(s)/PI(s) must have an eRA Commons account.

Budget and Duration

Application budgets are limited to $150,000 in direct costs in any single year.

The parent grant must be active when the application is submitted.

There must be a minimum of two years of support remaining on the parent award (not to include a no-cost extension) at the estimated time of award.

The maximum project period is 3 years.

Additional Information

Applicant organizations may submit more than one application, provided that each application is scientifically distinct.

The NIH will not accept duplicate or highly overlapping applications under review at the same time.
