The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is offering funding opportunities through the NIH Research Education Program (R25) to support short courses designed to increase the utilization of cognitive data from the International Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP).

The primary focus of these courses is to enhance skills in conducting cross-national comparative research using these cognitive data to study various aging and Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) topics. The initiative aims to develop training for scientists from multiple disciplines, fostering a deeper understanding of how different social, cultural, and institutional factors affect the trajectory of AD/ADRD in diverse contexts.

Scope of Work

The NOFO will support short courses designed to improve skills in conducting cross-national comparative research using cognitive data from the International HRS and HCAP.

The courses should complement and/or enhance the training of scientists already engaged or interested in behavioral and social science AD/ADRD research, help recruit new researchers from various backgrounds into AD/ADRD research, and provide course participants with formal and informal opportunities to interact with one another and with course faculty, and to form research collaborations.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include Higher Education Institutions, Nonprofits, For-Profit Organizations, Local Governments, State Governments, and Federal Governments.

The sponsoring institution must assure support for the proposed program, including adequate staff, facilities, and educational resources. Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply.

Participant costs must be itemized in the proposed budget and are allowable depending on the educational level/career status of the individuals to be selected to participate in the program.

Other program-related expenses, such as consultant costs, equipment, supplies, travel for key persons, may be included in the proposed budget.

Additional Information

Applicant organizations may submit more than one application, provided that each application is scientifically distinct.

NIH will not accept duplicate or highly overlapping applications under review at the same time. Program faculty researchers from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate as preceptors/mentors. Mentors should have research expertise and experience relevant to the proposed program.
