Description

The Public Health Strategies to Address Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: The National Healthy Brain Initiative, BOLD Public Health Centers of Excellence, and Public Health Adoption Accelerator cooperative agreement, administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supports evidence-based public health approaches to promote brain health, address cognitive impairment, and support caregivers. Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive condition affecting the aging U.S. population and was the 5th leading cause of death for individuals aged 65 and older in 2021. This funding opportunity aligns with the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) Road Map Series and fulfills the aims of the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act.

Funding and Benefits

The total program funding available is $35,000,000, with an expected seven awards. The funding instrument is a cooperative agreement.

The opportunity is structured into three distinct components. Applicants may apply for multiple components but must submit a separate application per component.

  • Component 1: National Healthy Brain Initiative – Fund at least two organizations. Funding range: $2,500,000 to $3,000,000 per 12-month budget period.
  • Component 2: BOLD Public Health Centers of Excellence – Fund at least two organizations. Funding range: $750,000 to $1,000,000 per 12-month budget period.
  • Component 3: ADRD Public Health Adoption Accelerator – Fund up to two organizations. Funding range: $750,000 to $1,200,000 per 12-month budget period.

Cost sharing or matching is not required for this opportunity.

A wide range of organizations are eligible to apply for this funding opportunity, including:

  • Native American tribal organizations and federally recognized tribal governments
  • Public, private, and independent institutions of higher education
  • State, county, city, and special district governments
  • Public and Indian housing authorities
  • Small businesses and for-profit organizations

Key Activities and Focus Areas

Funded organizations will implement public health strategies guided by the HBI Road Map Series. Specific activities vary by component:

  • National Healthy Brain Initiative: Develop evidence-informed training on ADRD and caregiving for health care and public health professionals; expand the use of public health surveillance data, including adaptation of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) modules; and facilitate coordination among national partners.
  • BOLD Public Health Centers of Excellence: Specialize in one of three topic areas—dementia risk reduction, early detection and management, or dementia caregiving; identify and promote best practices; translate promising research into practical tools; and increase professional education to improve health outcomes.
  • ADRD Public Health Adoption Accelerator: Use dissemination and implementation science to accelerate the adoption of effective public health strategies; collaborate with CDC to create a prioritized list of ADRD approaches; engage partners, health care organizations, and policymakers; and provide technical assistance to Component 1 and 2 recipients.
