This grant opportunity, a collaboration between Pfizer and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), seeks proposals for quality improvement initiatives. The focus is on enhancing the safe management of patients diagnosed with migraine in the emergency department setting. The goal is to support clinical program development that addresses barriers to evidence-based management, disposition, and follow-up for this patient population.

Funding Opportunity Details

This program aims to support projects focused on clinical program development. These projects should overcome barriers to safe, evidence-based management, disposition, and follow-up of migraine patients in the ED. The initiatives should demonstrate improved patient safety, physician satisfaction, and/or patient satisfaction.

Projects should pinpoint and tackle obstacles and deficiencies concerning migraine management in the ED. This includes improving patient experience, outcomes of novel treatments, and access to follow-up care. System-based changes are highly encouraged within the project design.

Individual projects can request up to $200,000 USD, inclusive of all direct, overhead, and indirect costs. The intent is to support 3 to 4 projects. The maximum project length is 2 years.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants include medical, dental, nursing, allied health, and/or pharmacy professional schools. Healthcare institutions (both large and small), professional organizations, and government agencies are also eligible. These entities must have a mission related to healthcare improvement.

Only organizations are eligible to receive grants, not individuals or medical practice groups. Collaborations within and between institutions are encouraged, provided all partners have a relevant role. The requesting organization must have a key role in the project.

  • The applicant must be the Project Lead/Principal Investigator (PI) or an authorized designee.
  • The Project Lead/PI must be an employee or contractor of the requesting organization.
  • Requesting organization must be legally able to receive award funding directly from Pfizer Inc.

Key Focus Areas

The primary area of interest for this RFP is migraine. The specific focus is on improving the quality of care for patients with migraines in the emergency department setting. This includes decreased cost, decreased length of stay, decreased return visits, improved pain control, improved time to pain control, and decreased testing.

Projects should be evidence-based (education and/or quality improvement) and follow generally accepted scientific principles. Projects with the maximum likelihood to directly impact patient care will be given high priority. Multi-disciplinary collaborations are encouraged when appropriate.

Target audiences include emergency physicians treating adult patients presenting with symptoms of migraine in the ED. Projects that include an overt description of system changes will be given high priority. Educational efforts for grantees and patients may be appropriate components.
