Introduction

The Smithsonian Resilience and Sustainability Science Postdoctoral Fellowship 2025 is a program designed to support up to five post-doctoral fellows in conducting independent research aligned with the Smithsonian's goals of understanding and expanding resilience. The fellowship provides fellows with access to the Smithsonian's resources, including scientists, collections, exhibits, and data sets, to advance scientific understanding of resilience and sustainability in marine or terrestrial systems. The program emphasizes the interconnectedness of these systems with the people who depend on them and the services they provide.

Scope of Work

The fellowship focuses on research related to resilience and sustainability in complex marine or terrestrial systems, such as forests, freshwater systems, soils, etc. Proposals should address the connection between these systems and the people who rely on them. The research should explore socio-environmental external stressors as drivers of change, socio-environmental factors influencing adaptation and resilience, adaptive strategies, and adaptive responses/outcomes.

Applicants must have or will have received a Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins. They must propose to conduct research in residence at the Smithsonian.
