The State Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (STATEMAP), administered by the U.S. Geological Survey, supports the development of geologic framework data for areas vital to the economic, social, or scientific welfare of individual States and the Nation.
The primary objective of STATEMAP is to establish the geologic framework of areas determined to be vital to the economic, social, or scientific welfare of individual States and the Nation. The program fulfills the mission of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) and supports Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretarial priorities by developing a national geologic framework through the generation of new two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) geologic map databases. STATEMAP directly supports EO 14154 ("Unleashing American Energy"), and Secretarial Orders 3417 and 3418, which call for the acceleration of detailed geologic mapping in support of energy and critical mineral resources. Geologic mapping supported by STATEMAP provides foundational, standardized information necessary to manage land and water resources, discover and assess energy and mineral resources (including critical and rare earth minerals), understand and mitigate natural hazards, and inform national security decisions. Mapping efforts also support the development of modern infrastructure, including highways, bridges, and pipelines, by providing information for land-use planning and data on aggregate resources and building materials.
Eligibility is limited to State Geological Surveys pursuant to the National Geologic Mapping Act. For State Geological Surveys organized within a State university system, those universities may submit a proposal on behalf of the State Geological Survey.
The State Geologist, Survey Director, Chief Scientist (or similar position) determines mapping priorities in consultation with a multidiscipline State Mapping Advisory Committee (SMAC). Priorities are determined on the basis of:
Priorities are not dependent on past agreements with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
