About the Workshop

This workshop, organized by the Division for Graduate Studies at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), is designed for doctoral students in the initial or mid-phase of their research. It focuses on providing comprehensive knowledge of basic and advanced techniques using SPSS, STATA, NVivo, and ATLAS.ti.

The workshop aims to equip participants with practical, hands-on training in data processing, tabulation, and analysis. Emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of generated tables rather than theoretical concepts. Participants will learn to model data using IBM SPSS Statistics, STATA, NVivo, and ATLAS.ti.

The course is sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). It will cover topics ranging from the basics of data processing to advanced statistical analysis and qualitative data analysis techniques.

Workshop Topics and Software

The workshop will cover a range of topics including an introduction to IBM SPSS Statistics, its basic structure, and functionalities. Participants will learn how to import data from various sources such as SPSS, Excel, databases, and text files, as well as how to handle large datasets like NSSO, PLFS, and NFHS.

Furthermore, the workshop will delve into descriptive statistics, working with syntax in SPSS, and data visualization techniques. Participants will also learn about statistical analysis using parametric and non-parametric tests, causal analysis using OLS linear regression, and creating/editing charts.

The workshop will also cover Introduction to STATA, User interface, data menus, and basic commands. Exploring Datasets in Stata, Cross-section, time series, and panel data, Reshaping data (wide ↔ long), Data Processing and Management in Stata, Creating/editing variables, using conditions, Generating summary statistics, Categorical variable analysis, Regression Methods and Diagnostics, Data Visualization and Mapping, Basics of data visualization, Data merging and map generation, Spatial correlation methods, Project Work, Hands-on project using primary data, Assessment and presentation, Qualitative Data Analysis, Introduction to Data Analysis, Doing Data Analysis, Introduction to Qualitative Analysis Software, Exercise & Conclusion.

Dates, Venue, and Eligibility

The workshop will be held from June 9th to June 18th, 2025, at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) in Hyderabad. The venue address is N.O. Campus, Begumpet, Hyderabad-500016.

Eligibility is limited to scholars pursuing their Ph.D. in Social Sciences at Universities and Research Institutions across India. Both beginners and mid-level scholars are welcome to apply. Selection will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

A total of 30 participants will be selected, with 15 spots reserved for CESS scholars and 15 for external participants. Participants are requested to bring their own laptops with SPSS (preferably version 25) and STATA (version 15/16 or above) installed.

Registration and Accommodation

Interested participants can apply by filling out the application form available at https://forms.gle/33K8x8HKzHzeZdJh9. The last date for submission of the application is May 27th, 2025.

Learning Outcomes and Prerequisites

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to efficiently use SPSS, Stata, NVivo, and ATLAS.ti for basic analyses and graphics. They will also be able to conduct analyses in a reproducible manner, facilitating collaborative changes and follow-up studies.

Participants will gain the skills to handle various large-scale complex databases for detailed analysis. The workshop aims to enhance their capabilities in data processing, statistical analysis, and qualitative data analysis.

A prerequisite for this workshop is knowledge of elementary statistics and econometrics. This foundational knowledge will help participants grasp the advanced techniques covered during the sessions more effectively.
