The AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship Programme 2025 is open for applications.
The program is designed to support PhD students from African universities working in the field of Innovation and Development.
The fellowship aims to enhance their academic qualifications, improve dissertation quality, and prepare them for careers in innovation and development.
The program is funded by the Swedish Development Agency (Sida) and focuses on increasing the mobility and exposure of PhD students to international knowledge in the field.
The fellowship program involves a three-month study visit to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa. During the visit, fellows will engage in research activities, attend workshops, and receive mentorship from experts in the field.
The program aims to provide fellows with a deeper understanding of innovation and development, enhance their research skills, and connect them with a network of researchers and practitioners.
To be eligible for the AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship Programme, applicants must:
Be enrolled as a PhD student at a university in Africa.
Have completed their first year of studies by December 2024.
Have a background in Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Science and Technology Policy, Geography, History, or Development Studies.
Possess adequate English language skills.
Be actively working on a subject relevant to innovation and development.
Submit a brief application outlining their background, motivation, and expected outcomes of participation.
The fellowship covers return flight costs to Johannesburg (economy class), health insurance for the study period, and a stipend of approximately $600 per month for living expenses.
Costs for joint courses and mentoring are also covered by AfricaLics.
The scholarship does not cover costs for accompanying spouses, children, or additional travel within South Africa.
The fellowship program is for a duration of three months.
Applicants are responsible for handling visa issues with support from the AfricaLics Secretariat and UJ.
The scholarship only covers costs related to the student's visit.
The application deadline is October 7, 2024, at 23:00hrs East Africa time.
