The Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) is a vital initiative aimed at supporting small-scale sustainable development projects in Fiji. This program is particularly focused on enhancing the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups within local communities, including women, children, youth, and individuals with disabilities. By providing grants, the DAP seeks to empower these communities and foster sustainable development across various sectors such as health, education, water and sanitation, disaster resilience, gender equality, and disability inclusion.

Eligible applicants for DAP funding include non-profit community groups, non-government organizations, and other organizations dedicated to improving local community conditions. The program emphasizes projects that yield tangible, practical results and have a clear, positive impact on the community. To qualify for funding, projects must be supported by local communities, authorities, or government ministries, and they should include contributions from the community, whether in the form of labor, materials, transport, or financial support.

Applicants can request a maximum of AUD 60,000 (approximately FJD 89,000) for their projects, which should be completed within six months of receiving the funding. While larger projects may be considered on a case-by-case basis, the DAP prioritizes initiatives that are achievable, sustainable, and do not incur recurring costs. Furthermore, projects must incorporate considerations for gender equality and disability inclusion, and they should identify potential risks along with strategies for managing them.

Funding Restrictions

It is important to note that the DAP will not fund certain types of projects. Specifically, cash grants or micro-credit schemes, business or commercial ventures, and projects focused on building or repairing places of worship are excluded from funding. Additionally, the program does not support the purchase of major assets such as vehicles or boats, international travel or study tours, sporting tournaments, or cultural events that lack clear developmental benefits. Administrative expenses, including staff salaries and running costs, are also not eligible for funding.

Accountability and Reporting

Successful applicants will be required to maintain a high level of transparency and accountability throughout their projects. This includes signing a contract that outlines the terms and conditions of the grant, keeping detailed financial records of all expenditures, and submitting progress and final reports. Furthermore, applicants must facilitate site visits by representatives from the Australian High Commission to ensure compliance and monitor project outcomes.

Application Process

The DAP is currently accepting applications for its funding round, which will remain open from September 29 to November 30, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the outcomes by January 2026, with grants disbursed by March 2026. Applications must be submitted through the SmartyGrants online system, and any inquiries can be directed to the DAP via email. It is crucial to adhere to the application guidelines and deadlines to ensure consideration for funding.
