The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies’ Fellowship Programmes offer a unique setting for researchers from all disciplines to focus fully on their projects within an international community.

Overview

FRIAS fellowships are open to both early-career and senior researchers from Freiburg, Germany, and globally. The programme supports dedicated research time, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to University of Freiburg resources. Fellows receive a monthly living allowance, along with additional funding for accommodation and a mobility allowance to cover travel costs. Fellowship Opportunities

FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme

• Eligibility: Scientists who, at the time of application, have completed their PhD within the last eight years and have at least six months of research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country other than the one where they earned their first academic degree.
• Disciplines: Applications in all disciplines that can be supported at the University of Freiburg are welcome.
• Period of Funding: Four to ten months.
• Deadline for the 2027/28 Call for Applications: 18 September 2026, 13:00.

FRIAS Senior Fellowship Programme

• Eligibility: Scientists who, at the time of application, have completed their PhD and have at least eight years of post-doctoral experience and at least six months of research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country other than the one where they earned their first academic degree.
• Disciplines: Applications in all disciplines that can be supported at the University of Freiburg are welcome.
• Period of Funding: Three to eight months.
• Deadline for the 2027/28 Call for Applications: 18 September 2026, 13:00.

FRIAS Sustainable Governance Fellowship Programme for Researchers from Africa

• Eligibility: Scientists who, at the time of application, have completed their PhD and have at least eight years of post-doctoral experience and at least six months of research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country other than the one where they earned their first academic degree. Fellowships are available to researchers of all nationalities based in an African institution.
• Disciplines: Humanities and social sciences.
• Period of Funding: Six months.
• Deadline for the 2027/28 Call for Applications: 18 September 2026, 13:00.
