The FY2026 Historic Preservation Fund - Annual Tribal Historic Preservation Office Grants, administered by the National Park Service, provides funding to support the operation of Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs). These grants assist THPOs in carrying out activities related to the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

Overview

This funding program supports the operation of Tribal Historic Preservation Offices within allowable program areas described in the National Historic Preservation Act (54 U.S.C. 300101 et seq.). The purpose of the program is to provide grants to THPOs for the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties by such means as survey, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, review of Federal undertakings, education, and listing in the National Register of Historic Places and Tribal Registers. These grants assist THPOs in carrying out the NHPA historic preservation activities that a Tribe agreed to assume from the State Historic Preservation Office on tribal lands under their Partnership agreement with the National Park Service.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants: Federally recognized Native American tribal governments.

In accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act (54 U.S.C. 302907), this funding opportunity is limited to Tribal governments with signed Memorandum of Agreements with the National Park Service to assume duties of the State Historic Preservation Office on Tribal lands, as defined in 54 U.S.C. 302702 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Research Areas and Activities

Where relevant, staff and projects must comply with the appropriate Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Awards under this program must comply with and support 54 U.S.C. 300101 et seq. Activities supported include survey, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, review of Federal undertakings, education, and listing in the National Register of Historic Places and Tribal Registers.
