Description

The Grants to Australian Organisations Program supports activities related to, or assisting with the pursuit of an equitable and accessible system of federal civil justice.

Overview

This program is a long-running appropriation that has existed since at least 1991. The program is scheduled to run over three years, from the 2026–27 financial year to 2029–30. The objective is to fund suitable activities that relate to, or assist with the pursuit of an equitable and accessible system of federal civil justice.

Since 2016, the program has consolidated to funding four organizations on an ongoing basis across two program streams.

Research Areas or Activities

The intended outcomes of the program are structured across two streams:

  • Stream One:
    • Maintaining a website that provides free internet access to public legal information, including legislation, treaties, decisions of courts and tribunals, and public reports and journals.
    • The provision of information, research, training, and educative programs designed to increase the knowledge of Australian judicial officers and others.
    • The provision of research into judicial administration and improvement of education programs for legal officers in relation to court administration and judicial systems.
  • Stream Two:
    • Increased awareness of the requirements expected from the application of the principles of International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
    • Directly supporting Australia’s obligations under the Geneva Conventions to disseminate IHL domestically, including through military instruction and by encouraging the study of IHL among the civilian population.
    • Assisting the Australian Government to meet its broader IHL responsibilities, including through the provision of IHL education to government agencies, the Australian Defence Force, and civil society.
