The Humboldt Research Fellowship enables researchers to conduct their own research project at a German research institution of their choice, in collaboration with a host. Hosts may also apply for a subsidy towards research costs. This fellowship is designed to support researchers at various stages of their careers, from postdocs to experienced researchers.
The fellowship provides financial support, personal support, and flexibility in determining the start date. Fellows can also attend an intensive language course prior to their research stay. Additional financial support is available for families, health insurance, and travel expenses.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation maintains contact with fellows even after their research stay, offering alumni sponsorship measures to support their careers and future research collaborations. Return fellowships and later visits to Germany are also possible.

For postdocs, the doctorate should have been completed within the last four years, or be within six months of completion. A written summary of findings and publications in internationally reviewed academic journals or publishing houses are required.
For experienced researchers, the doctorate should have been completed within the last twelve years, with an extensive list of publications in academic journals and publishing houses. If a doctorate is uncommon in the applicant's field or country, applications are accepted up to 16 years after completing a master's degree, provided there is a commensurate publication record.
Applicants must not be German nationals unless they have lived and worked abroad for an extended period.
Confirmation of available research facilities and a host's statement are required.
Expert reviews and demonstration of adequate language skills are necessary.
