The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers Humboldt Research Fellowships to researchers of all nationalities and disciplines, providing support for conducting research in Germany. The program aims to foster a diverse and inclusive environment, encouraging applications from female scientists and underrepresented groups.
The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports researchers at different career stages to conduct research with a host at a German institution. Hosts can also apply for research cost subsidies.
For postdocs, the fellowship provides €2,700 per month plus additional benefits, with durations from 6 to 24 months, divisible into up to three stays within three years. Experienced researchers receive €3,200 per month plus benefits, for fellowships lasting 6 to 18 months, also divisible into up to three stays within three years.
Fellows receive personal support, can start flexibly, and may attend an intensive language course with their partners. Additional financial support includes family benefits, health insurance subsidies, and travel allowances.
The fellowship is open to post-doctoral researchers with above-average qualifications from all over the world, regardless of their field.
Postdocs: Must have completed their doctorate within the last four years or be within six months of completion with a written summary of findings.
Experienced Researchers: Must have completed their doctorate within the last twelve years.
Applicants should have publications in academic journals and publishing houses that are reviewed according to international standards.
If a doctorate is not possible or uncommon in your field/country, you can apply up to 16 years after completing your master’s degree, provided you have a commensurate publication record.
Applications must be submitted online with all required documents. Contact the Humboldt Foundation (info[at]avh.de) for any questions before submission.
Required documents include a curriculum vitae (max. two pages), research outline (max. five pages), a complete list of publications, a list of key publications, key publications themselves, a doctoral certificate, and a German language certificate (if required). Additionally, a host's statement confirming research facilities and two expert reviews are needed.
The host and expert reviewers must upload their documents personally to a protected area. The application can only be submitted once these documents are uploaded.
The Selection Committee meets every March, July, and November. Submit your completed application well in advance of your desired selection date. Processing takes approximately four to eight months.
The deadline for meeting formal conditions related to career stage and previous stays in Germany is the date the application is received. Decisions are typically communicated about five weeks after the selection meeting.
The selection criteria include academic career, record, quality of key publications, originality and innovative potential of the proposed research, and future potential. The assessment considers individual life journey and educational background, also and especially in terms of equal opportunities and accessibility.
