The Institute for Advanced Study, School of Social Science, invites applications for residential fellowships. Approximately 20 scholars are selected each year, with a focus on both the designated theme and other diverse projects within the social sciences. This fellowship offers access to extensive campus resources and facilities, fostering a vibrant academic community.
Each year, around 20 scholars are invited to the Institute as residential fellows. The selection includes scholars working on the year's designated theme and those pursuing other projects within the social sciences. The fellowship aims to foster a diverse and intellectually stimulating environment.
The School of Social Science welcomes applications from both junior and senior scholars. A wide range of fields within the social sciences and related disciplines are considered. This inclusivity ensures a broad spectrum of perspectives and research areas.
Fellows, known as Members, gain access to various campus resources and facilities. These include offices, libraries, subsidized dining services, and housing. The Institute provides an environment conducive to focused research and collaboration.
To be eligible, applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent scholarly credentials at the time of application. The doctoral degree must be awarded no later than October 15 of the year preceding the fellowship year.
The fellowship requires residential participation for the entire academic year, spanning from September to May. This ensures active engagement in the Institute's intellectual community and activities.
Here's a summary of the eligibility requirements:
Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent by October 15, 2025.
Fellowship is residential for the full academic year (September 2026 – May 2027).
Applicants are required to submit an online application form. This form captures essential personal and professional information. Ensure all sections are completed accurately and thoroughly.
A crucial component is the research proposal, which should be up to 4 pages in length. This proposal should clearly outline the research project, its significance, and the intended methodology. A curriculum vitae is also required to showcase the applicant's academic and professional background.
A writing sample, not exceeding 50 pages, is necessary to demonstrate the applicant's scholarly writing abilities. Reference letters are not required and will not be accepted, emphasizing the importance of the submitted materials.
The fellowship term extends for the full academic year, from September 2026 to May 2027. Fellows are expected to be in residence during this period, actively participating in the Institute's activities.
The designated theme for the 2026–2027 academic year is "Emerging Forces in Political Economy." While the theme provides a focal point, applications on other social science topics are also encouraged.
Members are expected to be present on campus from mid-September through mid-May, excluding the break between mid-December to mid-January. Participation in a weekly, all-School seminar, including presenting one's own research, is mandatory.
The School aims to provide 50% of the base salary, with a maximum stipend of $80,000. This assumes that the fellow's home institution, sabbatical funding, or other grants will cover the remaining portion. Stipend amounts are determined based on several factors.
Factors influencing stipend calculation include base salary, availability of leave pay, and other institutional support. Additional funding is available, including a modest research fund of up to $800 for non-travel research expenses. An allowance to help defray the cost of relocating to the Institute may be available.
Subsidized health care and child care are available to Members, subject to certain eligibility criteria. Rental rates for campus housing range from $1,200/month for a studio apartment to $2,305 for a 3-bedroom townhouse for 2025-26.
