The International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) in Canada, sponsored by Power Corporation of Canada, aims to foster understanding and cooperation between emerging leaders in the United States and Canada. This program allows mid-career U.S. professionals to spend six to twelve months at a Canadian institution, deepening their knowledge of Canada. The program welcomes applicants from diverse fields, including academia, business, government, journalism, NGOs, and think tanks. Prior experience with Canada is not a requirement.

Scope of Work

The IAF in Canada provides a platform for mid-career professionals to conduct research and engage with Canadian institutions. Fellows are expected to develop a research project focused on U.S.-Canada relations during their fellowship period. The program encourages fellows to interact with Canadian experts and institutions, contributing to their understanding of Canada and its relationship with the United States.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the IAF in Canada, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.

  • Be a mid-career professional.

  • Possess a strong record of professional achievement.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to a career in foreign policy and an interest in U.S.-Canada relations.

  • Hold at least a bachelor's degree.

  • Have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months after the fellowship end date.

Budget and Duration

The IAF in Canada provides a stipend of $110,000 for a twelve-month fellowship period. A prorated amount is awarded for shorter durations. The program also offers a modest travel allowance. Fellows are considered independent contractors and are not eligible for employment benefits, including health insurance.

Additional Information

The selection process for the IAF in Canada is highly competitive. CFR awards one to two fellowships annually, giving preference to candidates who have not previously received a CFR fellowship.
