The Jana Robeyst Trust Fund (JRTF) offers small conservation grants to support early-career biologists and conservationists engaged in field research on endangered mammals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Overview

The JRTF supports projects with clear conservation and scientific value, encompassing both pilot and ongoing initiatives. Supported activities include field-based research, projects addressing specific conservation challenges, and those demonstrating tangible applied conservation benefits. Funding may also cover travel costs for presenting research at conferences or participating in workshops and training programs, as well as the purchase of essential field equipment required for fieldwork.

Funding and Benefits

  • Grant Size: $1000 to $10,000
  • Additional Funding Available: Grants of up to €1,500 are available.
  • Disbursement Timeline: Funds are disbursed within four weeks following acceptance.

Eligibility

The program is open to early-career biologists and conservationists of any nationality, provided their research focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa. Eligible projects must demonstrate strong conservation relevance, be conducted within Sub-Saharan Africa, and clearly outline applied conservation benefits or address identified conservation needs. The grant does not cover living expenses, salaries, thesis production costs, retrospective expenses, fundraising activities, or debt repayment. Office equipment and participation in internships or volunteer programs are generally not eligible unless essential for fieldwork or directly contributing to conservation outcomes. Education projects and community workshops are not supported under this program.

Applicants must submit a completed application form in English or French along with a CV that includes contact details for two referees; if a reference letter is included, referees may not be contacted. Applications must be submitted through a professional email address or accompanied by proof of affiliation with a university, research institution, or non-profit organization.
