Description

The Research Fellowship Program supports international scholars undertaking research in Japan. The application period for the 2027 program is scheduled from June 1 to June 30, 2026.

Overview

The programme is designed for applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet specific criteria. Successful fellows are intended to conduct research in Japan and return to their home country to contribute to its development.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must empathize with the core values of the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF).
  • Applicants must maintain a full-time occupation in their home country and commit to returning there upon completion of the fellowship.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of application (the birth year must be in or after 1981).
  • Applicants should not have prior or current experience of residing in Japan, excluding short-term visits for sightseeing or conferences.
  • Applicants must secure acceptance from a host institution in Japan before submitting an application.
  • Applicants must possess sufficient proficiency in English or Japanese.

Research Focus and Duration

  • Preferable Research Fields: Natural science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture.
  • Fellowship Period: Typically six months, spanning from June 2027 to March 2028. Applicants must specify the commencing and ending month on Application Form #1 (e.g., June 2027 to November 2027).
