The States Newsroom Capital Reporting Fellowship 2025 is a summer program designed to provide opportunities for students and new journalists from underrepresented backgrounds to gain experience in covering state government.
The program aims to address the lack of diversity in journalism and provide a platform for individuals to develop their skills in holding elected officials accountable.
The fellowship offers a full-time summer schedule covering state policy in areas such as education, healthcare, and criminal justice.

Fellows will be expected to work full-time during the summer and will be provided with one-on-one mentoring, weekly professional development sessions, and portfolio improvement support.
The fellowship is open to students currently enrolled as juniors or seniors or recent graduates of an accredited institution of higher education.
Preference is given to applicants majoring in journalism, broadcasting, or communications, but other majors will be considered.
The program prioritizes applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, including women, Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), differently abled, first-generation college students, and/or members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
The fellowship provides an hourly wage of $20/hour for a 40-hour week.
A small stipend for housing assistance can also be negotiated.
The fellowship is a full-time summer program.
The fellowship includes career preparation benefits such as one-on-one mentoring, weekly professional development sessions, portfolio improvement, and a year of coaching beyond the fellowship.
