Introduction

The University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt” is offering a Fellowship Programme for the year 2025. The programme aims to promote excellent research at the University of Bayreuth (UBT) and advance internationalisation of research and networking with top universities worldwide. The programme offers two types of fellowships: Senior Fellowships and Junior Fellowships.

Scope of Work

The Fellowship Programme supports academic exchange across disciplines, cultures, and countries. Successful applicants will become Fellows at the Centre and benefit from the university’s research environment. Fellows are invited to conduct research projects in Germany with a local host at UBT. The local hosts provide office, lab space, and infrastructure support.

Eligibility

The Fellowships are awarded to individuals from abroad with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a merit-based selection process. The selection criteria focus on the applicant's academic excellence and the cooperative project. The programme values diversity in its awardees and is committed to gender equality. Female scholars and those who can contribute to the university’s research diversity are encouraged to apply.

Budget and Duration

• Senior Fellowships: Award sum 40,000 €

• Junior Fellowships: Award sum 20,000 €

• Additional family allowance of 250€ for Fellows accompanied by at least one child

Additional Information

Applicants must identify a researcher in Bayreuth before submitting their application. Members of the Cluster of Excellence (as defined by § 11 (3) of the Cluster Rules) cannot act as hosts if the research focus of the application is on African Studies. This is due to regulations of the German Research Foundation stipulating that the Centre cannot provide funding to enhance the resources of the university’s Cluster of Excellence.
