Introduction

The UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme offers registered doctoral students the opportunity to conduct research on developing economies at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).

The fellowship provides access to UNU-WIDER's resources and facilities, allowing fellows to work with researchers in areas of mutual interest. Fellows typically spend three months at UNU-WIDER, preparing research papers and presenting seminars on their findings. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

Scope of Work

The fellowship program allows PhD students to conduct research on developing economies, utilizing UNU-WIDER's resources and facilities. Fellows are expected to prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their findings during their stay. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program and have demonstrated research capabilities in developing economies. While preference is given to candidates in economics, other social science disciplines are welcome. Fluency in English (oral and written) and strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills are essential. Applications from early-career researchers, women, and researchers from developing countries are particularly encouraged. The program is specifically designed for researchers in the later stages of their PhD.

Budget and Duration

UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant covering travel to and from the PhD granting institution or country of residence, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend of EUR 2,000 for living expenses in Helsinki during the fellowship period. The program does not cover expenses related to dependents. The monthly stipend applies only to the period of stay in Helsinki, not online.
