The Kohli Fellowship for Sociology is a two-year research fellowship offered to researchers who have recently completed their PhD. The fellowship provides financial support for a postdoctoral stay at the WZB in Berlin or the EUI in Fiesole/Florence. The fellowship aims to support researchers in engaging in new research projects, advancing publications, and developing research collaborations.
The Kohli Fellowship provides researchers with the opportunity to conduct independent research in the field of sociology. Fellows are expected to develop and pursue their own research projects, publish their findings, and engage in collaborative research activities.
The fellowship also provides opportunities for professional development, such as attending conferences and workshops.
The Kohli Fellowship is open to applicants who have completed their PhD within the past five years or have official approval to defend their thesis by the time of the start of the programme.
Preference is given to those who have recently completed a doctorate, not had a postdoctoral position before and/or are on the job market. Candidates must have received their Ph.D. between 01/09/2020 and 01/09/2025 and the Ph.D. defence should take place no later than 31/12/2025. The expected level of English proficiency is level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
The Kohli Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of 2,500 EUR, a research allowance of 100 EUR, and a subsidy towards the cost of private (travel) health and liability insurance of 70 EUR per month. The fellowship is typically awarded for a duration of 24 months.
Early-stage researchers who are at the EUI at the time of the application deadline are not eligible for the Max Weber Fellowship. Those who have formerly been at the EUI can apply for a Fellowship after having been continuously away from the EUI in a full-time occupation or fellowship for at least one year by the application deadline. Native English speakers are exempt from proof of English proficiency.
The application deadline for the Kohli Fellowship for Sociology 2025 is October 18, 2024.
Interested candidates can apply within the framework of the MWP’s general call for applications. The application should include the following documents:
A Curriculum Vitae, including a list of publications
An ‘Academic Career Statement’
A Research Proposal
The names of two to three academic referees and at least two letters of reference
The selection process for the Kohli Fellowship is competitive. Applications are reviewed by a panel of experts in the field of sociology. The panel considers the applicant's research experience, research proposal, and potential for future success in the field.
