The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is offering a substantial funding opportunity for astronomy research in the UK through their Astronomy Large Awards program. This program targets large, multi-year projects that tackle significant research questions or develop innovative technology with the potential to produce world-leading results.
Focus areas: The program covers research in astronomy observation, theory, solar system studies, and planetary studies. This includes stellar physics, studies of transient phenomena, the interstellar medium, cosmology, and laboratory astrophysics relevant to the listed areas. Proposals in technology development are also considered, but the technology readiness level (TRL) must be between one and four.
Eligibility: The lead applicant must be employed by an eligible UK research organization. Researchers are advised to check their organization's and their own eligibility before applying.
Award details: Large awards support research projects for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years. STFC will cover 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) for most funding headings.
Two-stage application process: Proposals are submitted in two stages. The first stage involves an outline application due on July 24, 2024. Successful applicants will then be invited to submit a full application.
Large, collaborative projects: Large awards are intended for big, thematic research programs. Proposals should demonstrate a clear structure and collaboration between different interdependent components, going beyond a collection of separate projects.
Universities and research organizations: Only the lead research organization can submit an application. However, the project team can include collaborators from other universities or research institutions, both in the UK and internationally.
Emphasis on world-leading research: The STFC is looking to fund projects with the potential to make significant contributions to the field of astronomy. Proposals should clearly outline the scientific merit and potential impact of the research.
