The scientific doubts about solar radiation management (SRM) as a possible reaction to climate change are supposed to be addressed by this research initiative. By adjusting Earth's radiative balance, SRM methods reflect more sunlight into space, reducing global warming. Still, the extensive application of SRM can unexpectedly affect the surroundings.

Under this program, researchers supported will replicate the Earth's response to several SRM scenarios using advanced climate models. These models will consider elements such as variations in ocean temperatures, precipitation patterns, and atmospheric circulation patterns. Along with possible regional and worldwide effects of SRM, including changes in agricultural output and severe storms, the study will investigate

The program's third theme promotes research on the social and financial ramifications of implementing SRM technologies. This study might look at things like government, international cooperation, and the possibility of unanticipated effects on world food security and economic stability.

Theme 4 then centers on investigating the viability and hazards connected to the still under development-of new SRM methods. Although these approaches could have benefits over current ones, their efficacy and safety depend on thorough assessment and hence they demand special attention.

Funding research across four categories, the NERC program seeks to offer a thorough scientific evaluation of the possible advantages and hazards of solar radiation control as a tool for tackling climate change. Future policy decisions about the application of SRM technology will depend much on this understanding.

Apply for funding to carry out climate modeling to understand the impacts of solar radiation management (SRM) techniques if implemented at scale.

You must be:

  • based at a UK research organization eligible for Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funding

  • in a role that meets the individual eligibility requirements

The full economic cost (FEC) of your project depends on the theme, as follows:

  • theme one: up to £3,300,650

  • theme two: up to £3,300,650

  • theme three: up to £2,806,250

  • theme four: up to £1,693,750

We will fund 80% of the FEC.

Four projects will be funded for up to 54 months, to begin in April 2025.
