The AIJC African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award 2024 is a prestigious award recognizing outstanding investigative reporting from Africa.

Supported by Absa, the award aims to highlight impactful stories that uncover hidden truths, hold the powerful accountable, and serve the public interest.

The award is open to all African journalists or teams of journalists working in any media, for stories published or broadcast in Africa between June 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024.

Scope of Work

The award recognizes the best example of investigative reporting from and about Africa over the year ending June 30th.

The award can be given to a journalist or a team of journalists working in any medium, for a single story or a series of stories published or broadcast in Africa during the previous year.

Eligibility

The award is open to all African journalists or teams of journalists working in any media.

Entries must be for stories from and about Africa published or broadcast in African media between June 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024.

No individual journalist or organization can be part of more than two entries.

Each entry may consist of no more than five stories.

Budget and Duration

The prize for the AIJC African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award is US$5,000.

Major travel costs, including flights, accommodation, and transport, will be covered for the finalists.

Additional Information

The award is judged by a panel of experts who have the discretion to set and use criteria they consider appropriate and reasonable.

The judges will consider the originality of the story, the investigative work involved, and the impact of the story, particularly in relation to public service.
