The CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) is a 2-year paid fellowship that provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in computer science, data analytics, and data science to public health. The program aims to address current and future public health needs by applying information science and technology to the practice of public health. Informatics Fellows are assigned to host sites within CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), where they work on advanced projects to enhance information systems and data projects to improve the nation’s health.
Informatics Fellows work on advanced projects to enhance information systems and data projects to improve the nation’s health. They share their expertise while also growing their skills through classroom and experiential learning. Fellows are assigned to host sites within CDC, and some assignments may also occur in other federal agencies, as well as state and local health departments.
Must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, DrPH) from an accredited academic institution in one of the following fields: Public health, medicine, healthcare/health services research, computer science, data science, or medical/public health informatics, statistics or epidemiology, engineering, or operations research.
Must have a master’s degree (MPH, MS, MSc) from an accredited academic institution and at least one year of documented experience in one of the following fields: Public health, medicine, healthcare/health services research, computer science, data science, or medical/public health informatics, statistics or epidemiology, engineering, or operations research.
The fellowship is a 2-year paid program. Master’s degree fellows are paid at the GS 11, step 3 level, and doctoral degree fellows are paid at the GS 12, step 3 level. Fellows receive the same benefits as other CDC FTE employees, including medical insurance and leave.
PHIFP applicants should document any research or evaluation experience that they completed during or after their academic training. Acceptable experience includes publications, thesis writing and defense, poster presentations, and/or a research or evaluation proposal. Accepted fellows must relocate to programs at CDC locations. Applicants must verify that they are not a citizen of a country designated as a state sponsor of terrorism per this US Department of State website.
