The CERC Migration Journalism Fellowship Program 2025 is a one-month residency program at Toronto Metropolitan University for journalists interested in deepening their knowledge about immigration and migrant integration research. The program aims to foster collaboration between researchers and journalists to enhance the communication of evidence-based knowledge on migration and integration issues. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity for journalists to gain insights into migration research, conduct field research projects, and connect with researchers and stakeholders.
The fellowship involves a residency in Toronto for 20 to 35 consecutive days between March 1 and November 30, 2025 (excluding July and August). During the residency, fellows will have the opportunity to conduct their own field research project, participate in CERC Migration's research events and workshops, and interact with researchers to explore the intersection of journalism and research.
The fellowship is open to staff and freelance journalists who regularly cover politics, society, culture, or the economy, related to national or international issues. Applicants must have a minimum of five years of media work experience and provide examples of work covering complex international issues. They should also indicate their areas of interest within the field of migration.
The fellowship provides a stipend of $4,000 CAD, including a travel allowance, to cover expenses related to the residency. The residency duration is 20 to 35 consecutive days between March 1 and November 30, 2025, excluding July and August.
The fellowship includes an academic host from the CERC Migration research team, access to office space and resources, and networking opportunities through participation in research events and workshops. There is no expectation that journalists will produce stories about TMU during or after their residency.
The application deadline is November 1, 2024.
The application should include:
A short CV (maximum four pages)
A cover letter (maximum two pages) describing the motivation for the residency, its benefits for the applicant's work, areas of interest within CERC Migration research, proposed activities during the residency, preferred academic host, and proposed dates for the visit.
Two or three relevant work samples (written samples in PDF format, links for other digital content)
An optional recommendation letter from a supervisor/editor.
