The George F. Kennan Fellowship Grant established in 2015, aims to support experts from various policy-oriented sectors to examine crucial political, social, economic, cultural, and historical issues in Russia, Ukraine, and the region.
The fellowship seeks to bridge the gap between academia and the policy world, fostering collaboration among researchers from Russia, Ukraine, the US, and beyond. A grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York funds the fellowships.
The George F. Kennan Fellowship provides a platform for researchers to conduct in-depth research on critical issues related to Russia, Ukraine, and the surrounding region. Fellows are expected to contribute to the understanding of these issues through their research and engagement with the Kennan Institute and the broader policy community.
The fellowship is open to applicants from all countries. Foreign applicants must be eligible to obtain a J-1 exchange visitor visa. The Kennan Institute prioritizes diversity and inclusion, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds to apply. Selection is based solely on merit.
The George F. Kennan Fellowship stipend amount is $4,000, with research facilities, computer access, and some travel support. Health insurance and accommodation expenses are not covered. Awardees are expected to begin their three-month appointments within six months of accepting the fellowship. Fellows must reside at the Kennan Institute, Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., for the duration of the grant.
The fellowship encourages both individual and team applications. Teams can consist of two or three scholars.

The Kennan Institute will review all applications and select fellows based on the quality of their research proposals, experience, and potential contributions to the field.
Fellows are expected to submit a final report summarizing their research findings and activities during their residency.
