The University of Vienna is offering a PhD position as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant EASE (Early Earth, Venus, and Mars as Exoplanets).

The project focuses on the joint evolution of Earth, Venus, and Mars and their place in the larger family of exoplanetary systems.

The student will study the atmospheric evolution of the three planets and their exoplanetary analogues, focusing on non-thermal loss processes and the role of the magnetosphere in atmospheric escape and habitability.

The student will also join the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS).

Scope of Work

The PhD position involves studying the atmospheric evolution of Earth, Venus, and Mars, and their exoplanetary analogues.

The research will focus on non-thermal loss processes and the role of the magnetosphere in atmospheric escape and general habitability.

The student will utilize programming skills in Fortran and Python to conduct extensive simulations and analyses.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a completed Master's degree or Diploma in astrophysics or physics.

They should possess basic knowledge of astrophysics, programming skills (Fortran and Python preferred), excellent command of written and spoken English, and strong teamwork and communication skills.

Budget and Duration

The position is funded for four years with a 75% position (30 hours per week).

The starting date is flexible, preferably in February/March 2025.

The salary is a basic gross salary of EUR 3,578.80 (on a 40h/week basis) per month, 14 times a year.
