Introduction

The AWS AI Call for Proposals (CFP) for Fall 2024 aims to advance machine learning research by funding the development of open-source tools and research that benefits the machine learning community. AWS AI offers a broad and deep set of tools for businesses to create impactful machine learning solutions faster. The program welcomes proposals related to machine learning in areas such as Generative AI, Governance and responsible AI, Distributed training, Machine learning compilers and compiler-based optimizations, and other applied machine learning topics.

Scope of Work

The AWS AI CFP encourages research that uses machine learning tools, particularly AWS AI/ML services like Amazon SageMaker, Amazon AI services, and Amazon Bedrock. The program seeks to fund projects that have the potential to impact the research community and demonstrate high-quality scientific content.

Eligibility

For eligibility requirements, please refer to the ARA Program rules on the Rules and Eligibility page. Proposals should be prepared according to the proposal template and are encouraged to be a maximum of 5 pages, not including Appendices. In addition to the proposal, applicants must provide a list of open-source tools they plan to contribute to and the AWS ML tools they will use.

Budget and Duration

Selected Principal Investigators (PIs) may receive unrestricted funds, up to $70,000 USD on average, AWS Promotional Credits, up to $50,000 USD on average, and training resources, including AWS tutorials and hands-on sessions with Amazon scientists and engineers. Amazon Research Awards (ARA) are structured as one-year unrestricted gifts. The budget should include a list of expected costs specified in USD and should not include administrative overhead costs. The final award amount will be determined by the awards panel.

Submission period: September 25, 2024 - November 6, 2024 (11:59PM Pacific Time)

Decision letters will be sent out February 2025

Reporting Requirements

Award recipients are expected to provide updates and feedback to ARA via surveys or reports on the status of their research.
