The International Travel Award Scheme for the Biological Sciences is a grant offered by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to support short-term international travel for BBSRC-supported researchers.

This scheme aims to facilitate collaborations, prepare joint funding proposals, visit overseas facilities, or attend European consortia-building events.

The funding is open to researchers holding a current BBSRC research grant or employed at BBSRC institutes.

Scope of Work

The International Travel Award Scheme supports short-term travel for various purposes, including:

  • Initiating contacts with international partners to discuss or prepare proposals for international programs.

  • Visiting specific facilities not available in the UK, undertaking a piece of work, or gaining access to techniques or materials beneficial to the BBSRC research project or team.

  • Attending European consortia-building events to discuss a future role in it.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the International Travel Award, applicants must be:

  • A holder of a current BBSRC research grant.

  • A BBSRC-supported researcher employed at BBSRC institutes.

The application must be made by a principal investigator, but the principal investigator does not have to be the one traveling.

Applications can only be submitted after the BBSRC grant has started, and there must be at least six months remaining on the project from the start of the international travel award.

Students are not eligible to apply.

Budget and Duration

The maximum award available is £3,000 (100% FEC), limited to travel and subsistence costs.

Stays can be up to one month in duration.

The application must be submitted at least six weeks before the intended travel date.

Additional Information

The award cannot be used for salary costs, consumables, equipment, or other research costs.

Applicants are encouraged to follow the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and the Technician Commitment.

UKRI is committed to ensuring that effective international collaboration in research and innovation takes place with integrity and within strong ethical frameworks.
