This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications to investigate protective and pathogenic mechanisms at the nexus of mitochondrial function and aging in the context of HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy (ART) and exposure to addictive substances.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) anticipates this foundational knowledge could be leveraged to develop targeted therapies and improve outcomes in people aging with HIV, substance use and addiction.

This NOFO requires a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP).

Scope of Work

This NOFO invites applications to investigate protective and pathogenic mechanisms at the nexus of mitochondrial function and aging in the context of HIV infection, ART and exposure to addictive substances.

Basic and preclinical research projects are appropriate.

Substances of interest include but not limited to: synthetic and non-synthetic opioids, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, stimulants, psychedelics, xylazine, addictive prescription drugs, cannabinoids, or combinations of these substances.

Budget and Duration

The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed $275,000.

No more than $200,000 in direct costs may be requested in any single year.

The maximum project period is 2 years.

Additional Information

Applicant organizations may submit more than one application, provided that each application is scientifically distinct. The NIH will not accept duplicate or highly overlapping applications under review at the same time.
